1959 Goggomobil Dart

Full Restoration

You can see from one of the last photos this car came to us as a rolling something-or-other and looking like it was from another planet. We did the full restoration from bodywork, chassis work through to the mechanicals. It was disassembled and the chassis placed on a rotisserie. The body was bead blasted and had extensive fibreglass repairs done to it. Seals, glasswork, custom made trims and so on were all sorted. Some complementary work, such as the remanufacture of part of the steering column and the upholstery was outsourced to local craftspeople. This car was a prize winner at Motorclassica in Melbourne.

Background Information from the Owner

In February 2010, this Goggomobil Dart was purchased from its owner in Hervey Bay, Queensland complete with ambulance seats of all things (apparently they were more comfortable) and from memory, a Toyota steering rack!  After a full restoration by GT Motors, the car went off to Motorclassica in Melbourne in 2018 and took out the prize for Post War Classic Open.

Most people would be familiar with the Yellow Pages ads of the 1990s which made the catchphrase ‘G-O-G-G-O’ famous.  A feel-good ad, it is now part of advertising folklore. As Nick Galvin of the SMH explained, “Scottish character actor Tommy Dysart has a problem with his Goggomobil (Not the Dart. Most emphatically not the Dart) and he turns to the Yellow Pages to find someone who can help. His childish delight when he connects with a fellow Goggomobil nerd is beautifully infectious as is his final line, “It’s a wee ripper!” Later, Dysart and his instantly recognisable accent turned up spruiking insurance for motor insurer Shannons, briefly incurring the legal wrath of Telstra, who accused the company of pinching their idea.” Whilst Yellow Pages used a different Goggomobil model, Shannon’s opted for the Goggomobil Dart in green livery.
